Maybe the academy was run by Empire/First Order sympathizer types.
Her parents were honestly probably sympathizers in that way, whether or not they'd say so openly and boldly. Her brother, on the other hand, is a Resistance + Rebel supporter all the way.
Probably they now keep company with the Resistance. They need a doctor, Simon is glad to provide, even if he's sometimes a bit aghast. And she mostly wanders around the base and offers strategic assistance out of nowhere, or something.
She might be learning how to fly.
She's probably a little Force-sensitive, which may or may not have been exploited in the past and may or may not be something she's fully aware of.
She can still sometimes read minds in her way.
And she definitely still loves to dance.
